NAX Elite baseball program
5 Tool Fieldhouse is partnering with Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) to bring the Edmonton area its first elite baseball program. This program is available to select athletes who want to take their game to the next level. In depth individual skill work throughout the fall, winter and spring will be the focus, as well as team fundamentals which will be what each of our players will need as they move on throughout their career.
The NAX Baseball program will be an after school program which will allow athletes to attend the high school of their choice. The program will run 5 days a week and consist of outdoor practices, and then move indoors to 5 Tool Fieldhouse during the winter months. If players chose, they may attend John Maland High School in Devon. While attending John Maland, our athletes will have direct access to NAX educational staff who will guide each athlete through their academics and college prep programs. Students that chose to attend another high school will be able to access the staff in a remote capacity.
Athletes intending on moving on to post secondary opportunities will need to learn how to manage academics, athletics and training. At the NAX Baseball Program we will focus on being involved in those aspects for our athletes to ensure they have a better chance of being successful at that level.
Our coaching staff brings tons experience and knowledge to the NAX Elite Baseball Program. Mike Johnson played professionally for 17 years, as well as 10+ years with the Canadian National Team. While with the Canadian National Team, Mike participated in 2 Summer Olympics Games (Athens 2004 & Beijing 2008). He was also a part of the 2011 Pan American Games gold medal team which was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
Mike has been coaching locally since 2011 He has also been involved with the Canadian Junior National Team since 2011 as a guest coach and full time staff member. He has had the privilege of coaching many athletes who have gone on to play in the MLB. Such players include 1st round picks Mike Soroka (Atlanta Braves) and Josh Naylor (San Diego Padres). He has also coached locally in the Edmonton area at multiple levels. He is excited about passing on everything he has learned throughout his career to the athletes of the NAX Baseball Program.
Todd Betts was originally drafted in the 14th round by the Cleveland Indians; that was the beginning of a career that spanned over 13 years. Todd played for multiple organizations and experience a huge amount of success individually and with teams he was a part of including MVP Awards, All Star selections, Hall of Fame Inductions and Team Championships.
