NAX YOUTH Program

program

5 Tool is excited to offering an off season baseball program to athletes aged 9-13 who are interested in developing their baseball skills throughout the winter months.  Our program will run from September until the end of April  Individual skill and development work as well as team skill and strategy will be the focus throughout the winter training sessions. Such skills will include throwing (pitching), hitting, catching, infield & outfield work, as well as team defensive work.  Our main focus is to provide a fun, yet structured and disciplined program not only to develop better players, but to aid in developing better people.  We will strive to prepare each of our athletes for their upcoming season with their respective teams.

Our program will be an after school program that will give players from all over the Greater Edmonton area an opportunity to attend the school of their choice and train out of 5 Tool Fieldhouse.  5 Tool Fieldhouse is a multi purpose facility that has about 5,000 sq/ft of enclosed turf, 4 hitting tunnels, and is equipped with machines and mounds.

CoachesHeading 2

Our coaching staff brings tons of experience and knowledge to the Youth Baseball Program.  Mike Johnson played professionally for 17 years, as well as 10+ years with the Canadian National Team.  He played for 5 seasons in the Major Leagues for the Baltimore Orioles and the Montreal Expos.  His career also took him overseas to Japan, South Korea and Taiwan for parts of 6 years.  While with the Canadian National Team, Mike participated in 2 Summer Olympics Games (Athens 2004 & Beijing 2008).  He was also a part of the 2011 Pan American Games gold medal team which was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

Mike has been coaching locally since 2011  He has also been involved with the Canadian Junior National Team since 2011 as a guest coach and full time staff member.  He has had the privilege of coaching many athletes who have gone on to play in the MLB.  Such players include 1st round picks Mike Soroka (Atlanta Braves) and Josh Naylor (San Diego Padres).  He has also coached locally in the Edmonton area at multiple levels.  He is excited about passing on everything he has learned throughout his career to the athletes of the NAX Baseball Program.

Todd Betts was originally drafted in the 14th round by the Cleveland Indians; that was the beginning of a career that spanned over 13 years. Todd played for multiple organizations and experience a huge amount of success individually and with teams he was a part of including MVP Awards, All Star selections, Hall of Fame Inductions and Team Championships.  Todd is also an Olympian who participated in the 2004 Games in Athens, and played in Japan and Taiwan.

Todd's coaching experience is second to none.  He has coached at all youth levels and even at the professional level.  Being a professional hitter, NAX Elite is very excited to have Todd developing our athletes.  He has an unbridled passion for the game of baseball and looks forward to working with all the hitters.

Assisting Mike and Todd will be Alberto Gonzalez from Cuba where he grew up playing baseball.  He has a degree in Sports and Physical Culture and has coached at various levels within Cuba, Canada and the United States, including International events with the Cuban National Team.  He has worked with many of the top MLB Players currently in the Major Leagues.  Ismael Hernandez has coached many different sports at a competitive level.  Although he is newer to coaching, he brings unbridled energy and a passion to help kids get better every single day.  We are excited about our staff and our ability to cover all aspects of the athlete's development.

It is important to us at 5 Tool Academy that our athletes receive the attention they need.  All of our coaches are and will be dedicated to our athletes. We will have the common goal of bringing out the best in each of our players individually, and working towards helping them achieve their individual goals.  Putting our athletes in the best position for their upcoming Try Outs and Seasons with their community teams.
